RUT955 Setup Guide

IMG

The Teltonika router serves as the: - Internet gateway - DHCP server, - Modbus Gateway

Setup

-- Note -- : I haven't configured one from scratch so my starting point is after having factory reset an already-provisioned unit. When you set one up for the first time you will need to install the sim and enter the pin.

INITIAL ACCESS

You will need to connect to the Teltonika via a ethernet cable for the initial setup, or after a factory reset. Wifi is possible but unreliable - don't bother with it.

  1. Connect the LAN cable for internet/intranet access into the WAN port on the router
  2. Connect your laptop/desktop to LAN1 on the router
  3. Navigate to 192.168.1.1 in the browser
  4. login using the USN: admin and PW: admin01
  5. Change the password to the one stored in keepass

WAN NETWORK ADDRESS

In order for the Teltonika to connect to the client's network using a static ip address we will need to enter the proper: - Ip address - netmask - gateway - broadcast - dns server

  • Navigate to Network → Interfaces in the Web UI
  • Click the Edit button (it looks like a pencil) for the WAN interface
  • Change the Protocol to Static and fill in the information.
  • Click Save & Apply

DELL IP ADDRESS

We want the dell pc to come online with a specific ip address which needs to be set on the Teltonika.

  • Navigate back to Network → Interfaces
  • Click the Edit button (it looks like a pencil) for the LAN interface
  • Add a new Static Lease (at the bottom of the page) for the Dell pc using the MAC address recorded in the inventory. Set the IP address to 192.168.1.100

MOXA IP ADDRESS

  • Navigate back to Network → Interfaces

192.168.137.145

FIREWALL AND VPN

The router won't be allowed to connect to the VPN until we add its WAN IP and its Mobile IP to the VPN Server's firewall exceptions.

  1. SSH into the router and run curl icanhazip.com. Record the IP
  2. Disable the WAN connection in the GUI and run curl icanhazip.com again. Record the IP
  3. Add the IPs to to the VPN Server's firewall exceptions.
  4. Use the wireguard ansible package to generate a wireguard config and provision it to the server
  5. Add the wireguard config values under Service → VPN → WireGuard
  6. Set allowed IPs to 0.0.0.0/0 in the peer config
  7. Enable Route allowed ips in the wireguard peer configuration

MODBUS

  1. In the RS485 menu, set Serial Type to Modbus Gateway

Common Issues

  1. The Teltonika router switches IP addresses alomst every time it is rebooted which means it may lose VPN connection due to the WG server firewalls not having the new IP address. Add the new IP to the firewall, or just drop the firewall to re-establish connectivity.

  2. The Teltonika sometimes decides it just doesn't want to hand out DHCP leases. Reseating the CAT5 cable in the Dell and Teltonika sometimes works, otherwise power-cycling the router and Dell seems to unstick things
